Octopus Fluids' Write and Draw Elephant Black is a black pigment ink, for writing with fountain pens. This is an excellent alternative to Platinum Carbon Black or other permanent black inks — waterfast, lightfast, highlighter-safe, and paintable.

About Octopus Write & Draw inks:
These are one of my favorite lines of Document (permanent) inks: richly pigmented, waterproof and UV resistant, mixable, and designed to be safe for use in fountain pens (in addition to dip pens, glass pens, and brushes). These inks offer smooth flow, resist feathering, and most colors will show beautiful shading when you write with them in Medium (or broader) fountain pen nibs.

  • Pigment-based, waterproof ink: Resists sunlight, water, and highlighters. Ideal for writing (journals, signatures, notes) that needs to last. This is a document ink, certified to meet DIN ISO 12757-2 and DIN ISO 14145-2 standards
  • Fountain pen friendly: Specially formulated for safe use in fountain pens—just remember to clean your pen regularly (if pigment inks dry in your pen, they'll tough to clean).
  • High lightfastness: Colors stay vibrant and true over time, even with exposure to sunlight (UV).
  • Quick-drying
  • Excellent for mixing: Easily blend colors or dilute with water for unique shades and watercolor effects.
  • Vegan ingredients: Made entirely from vegan components.

Care tip:

To ensure trouble-free use in fountain pens, avoid letting pigment inks like Octopus Write and Draw dry out in your pen.

This ink is FANTASTIC, much like Bottle & Plume. Black Elephant is a cheaper, and I reckon much better alternative to Microns, both being completely waterproof and having the same amount of darkness. With semi-frequent use, Black Elephant doesn’t seem to clog fountain pens, while also being useful for outlining sketches for watercolor painting or for archival writing & drawing. Put this in an XF/extra fine nib and you will most likely leave microns and even Platinum Carbon Black ink to gather dust. This ink is VERY underrated in my opinion.

Used it last week and its the best black I've ever tried. I've tried over forty kinds of black ink. This is the most fun one, and the best. It has a paint like feeling to it. I love everything about it. The opacity is very good, and I can paint into it and build up values and tones. The mark making with this ink is superb. It has great coverage, its waterproof, and eraser proof. The fifty ml size bottles are a nice size because I use a lot of ink. The ink was packaged well, and the price was nice. I discovered this ink and Bottle and Plume at the same time, and I'll be back for more. This website does a great job and I highly appreciate them.

This is an excellent ink. It's steadfast properties really stand up to various washes, certainly watercolor. Highly recommended for those seekin a deep, fast-drying, black ink. I've made it a staple for use in my ink, marker, watercolor sketchbooks! It's excellent for drawing and writing. Make sure to clean pens after use!
