Pelikan 4001 is Pelikan’s classic ink line. These inks have been refined over generations to do two things well: write cleanly and behave well in just about any fountain pen. The formula is designed to support consistent flow and crisp line definition, with an emphasis on being dependable in real-life pens and a wide variety of paper.

In practice, 4001 is known for running on the drier side. That’s not a flaw, it’s a design choice that tends to play especially well with wetter writers (such as Pelikan nibs) and can help keep things controlled on everyday (i.e not explicitly fountain-pen friendly) paper.

Bottom line: reliable, office-friendly performance: relatively fast dry times and low-maintenance behavior are a big part of why people keep it around. A couple of "special case" inks in the 4001 line:

4001 Royal Blue is specifically noted as erasable and washable (classic school/work ink behavior).

4001 Blue-Black is an iron gall (strongly acidic!) ink and is both more lightfast and more permanent than the standard dye inks in the range; it darkens over time.
