The LAMY Safari is the quintessential “best starter fountain pen.” I myself have owned a LAMY Safari since starting to write cursive in my Austrian second-grade class (believe it or not, these fountain pens used to be sold on every Viennese street corner at the “Tabak Trafik” tobacco/newspaper shops).

For me, these pens are cheap, relatively bulletproof, and built around a timeless and functional design. They’re available in a wide variety of colorways and have cheap, easily swappable replacement nibs, including a left-handed option. If you’re wondering if fountain pens might be a fun new hobby for you, the Safari is one of maybe three default “correct” choices I’d point you toward, and a perennial recommendation on Reddit’s r/fountainpens.

Just get one already. Unless you’re here for “just one more Safari” in your 42nd colorway, in which case…yeah, I get it.

The one detail to consider before choosing: its shaped grip guides where your fingers sit. Some writers love that guidance; others prefer a round grip. Have a look at the product photos and think about how you hold a pen.
