Fountain Pen Questions & Answers: The Short Version
I’m writing a much longer version of this FAQ, but it’s taking me quite a while to finish. I’ll link to it here when I’m done, but for now, here’s the shortest version of a FAQ I could make. This is based on all the questions I see coming in via support emails or discussions on Reddit.
What is the absolute minimum I need to get started with fountain pens?
Getting started is simple! At minimum, you need two things: a fountain pen and fountain pen ink. Many beginner pens come with a couple of disposable ink cartridges included – just pop one in and you’re ready to write. If cartridges aren’t included or you prefer bottled ink, make sure to get a fountain pen ink (more on ink types later) and a converter (a small refillable ink reservoir) if your pen uses one. Essentially, pen + ink is all you need to start writing. Optionally, having some decent paper helps (regular paper works, but fountain pen friendly paper can improve results – see the paper question below). There’s no huge investment required: even an affordable pen with one cartridge is enough to experience fountain pen writing.
I sell fountain pen starter kits that anyone can use to start writing with fountain pens, at an affordable price (I just about break even on them), and without spending hours researching what the best fountain pen starter models are, or which fountain-pen friendly paper you should buy.
Tip: For the very first fill, cartridges are easiest – plug one into the pen until you feel it puncture, then allow a minute or two for ink to saturate the nib. With that, you’ll be writing with your new fountain pen!
Which fountain pen nib size should I choose?
Nib size depends on your writing style and paper quality. A fine nib is ideal for everyday use, especially on low-quality or regular paper because it reduces ink flow and prevents feathering (feathering is when ink spreads along the paper fibers and makes your writing look fuzzy). If you're looking to experiment with colorful inks or want smoother, more expressive lines, medium or broad nibs are more enjoyable and versatile.
Do fountain pens leak easily?
Modern fountain pens are designed to avoid leaks when used and stored correctly. Typically, leaking happens when a pen experiences significant temperature or pressure changes, such as air travel. Storing your pen nib-up and ensuring it's not overfilled will greatly minimize leaks and keep your pen clean.
How do I fill a fountain pen with ink?
Filling your fountain pen is easy and depends on your preference. You can use pre-filled cartridges, which snap easily into place. For more variety, a converter (a cartridge-shaped plastic thing with a built-in filling mechanism) lets you draw bottled ink directly into the pen using a simple twisting or piston action—ideal for accessing a wider range of ink colors than manufacturers make available in cartridge form.
How often do I need to clean my fountain pen?
Ideally, clean your fountain pen every 4-6 weeks or whenever you switch ink colors. Regular cleaning prevents dried ink buildup that can clog your nib and feed. Simply rinse the nib and converter thoroughly with cool water until the water runs clear, then let everything air dry.
Can I use any paper with a fountain pen?
You can use regular paper, but fountain pen-friendly paper will give you a superior writing experience. Regular copy paper can cause ink to feather or bleed through, making your handwriting less crisp. Higher-quality or specifically designed fountain pen paper will highlight the beauty of your ink and nib performance.
Why does my pen feel scratchy?
A scratchy pen usually means the nib tines are slightly misaligned or you're applying too much pressure while writing. Try writing gently, and if the scratchiness persists, inspect the nib alignment closely. A gentle adjustment or smoothing on fine-grit paper can often quickly resolve this issue.
What's the difference between bottled ink and ink cartridges?
Ink cartridges offer convenience, cleanliness, and ease of use, making them great for beginners or when you're on the go. Bottled inks, while requiring a converter or piston-filler pen, come in an extensive variety of colors, and are often more economical over time. Bottled inks also allow you to mix colors for unique shades.
Are fountain pens difficult to maintain?
Not at all! Fountain pen maintenance is straightforward and quick. Regular cleaning every few weeks ensures consistent performance. With basic care and occasional rinsing, your fountain pen will provide reliable service for years.
What is "feathering" and how do I stop it?
Feathering occurs when fountain pen ink spreads out into the paper fibers, making your lines look blurry or uneven. It's most common on inexpensive or highly absorbent papers. To stop feathering, switch to smoother, higher-quality paper or opt for inks known to have less feathering.
Do I have to use the same brand of ink as my fountain pen?
No, you don't need to stick to the same brand of ink as your pen. Most fountain pen inks are interchangeable between brands. Just avoid inks specifically labeled as India Ink, calligraphy ink, or dip pen ink, as these can damage fountain pen components.
Can left-handed people use fountain pens comfortably?
Absolutely! Many left-handed writers comfortably use fountain pens. Choosing quick-drying inks and finer nibs reduces the risk of smudging. Adjusting your grip slightly and experimenting with your writing angle can also enhance your comfort and handwriting clarity. Also, you might want to buy some blotting paper to put under your hand as you write.
Should I store my fountain pen vertically or horizontally?
You can safely store fountain pens either way for short-term daily use. However, for long-term storage or when traveling, it’s best to keep your pen vertically with the nib facing upwards. This minimizes the risk of leakage or ink pooling in the cap.
My fountain pen stopped writing—what should I do?
Most often, a pen that stops writing simply needs cleaning. Ink residue can dry and block the flow through the nib and feed. Flush the pen thoroughly with cool water, let it dry completely, then refill it with fresh ink—this typically solves the issue.
Are fountain pens expensive?
Fountain pens vary widely in price, from affordable entry-level models to luxurious collectible pieces. For beginners, plenty of excellent options exist under $25, providing reliable performance and enjoyable writing without breaking the bank. You can always upgrade later based on your preferences.
How long do ink cartridges last?
A typical standard ink cartridge lasts roughly 20-30 pages of average writing. Writing style, nib size, and paper absorbency all influence how quickly you’ll use up a cartridge. Having a few extras handy ensures uninterrupted writing.
What's the difference between dye-based and pigment-based ink?
Dye-based inks are bright, vibrant, and easy to maintain, as they typically rinse out of pens easily. Pigment-based inks are waterproof and more permanent but may require regular cleaning since they can leave residue if dried inside the pen. Choose based on whether you prioritize ease of use or water resistance.
Can I take my fountain pen on an airplane?
Yes, fountain pens can safely accompany you on flights. Just a week before writing this post, I flew on a plane with my Hongdian M2 (a small, pocket-sized anodized aluminum fountain pen) and had no issues whatsoever. To avoid leaks due to cabin pressure changes, fill your pen completely or keep it empty, and store it nib-up during ascent and descent. Some people prefer cartridges for air travel, as they are sealed and less prone to leaking.
If I’m worried, I just wrap the pen(s) I’m taking in a paper towel and throw them into a ziploc bag in my carry-on (usually in my clear toiletry bag, for easy transport at security checkpoints).
What is shading or sheen in fountain pen ink?
Shading occurs when ink shows different shades of color as you write, creating depth and interest. Sheen refers to a metallic or reflective surface effect visible at certain angles. Both effects are more pronounced with medium or broad nibs and quality paper, adding personality to your handwriting.
Note: some sheening inks, due to their chemistry, can take MUCH longer to fully dry than other inks. You might get smudging even a day after you’ve finished writing, if you press and smudge hard enough.
Will using a fountain pen improve my handwriting?
Fountain pens can help you improve your handwriting by requiring slower, more controlled writing. The reduced hand pressure required can lead to less fatigue, encouraging practice and consistent handwriting style. But you’ve got to actually try to improve your handwriting to make progress, so keep that in mind.
